OPGW Fiber Composite Ground Wire

OPGW optical cable, Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire (also known as optical fiber composite overhead ground wire). The optical fiber is placed in the ground wire of the overhead transmission line to form a fiber communication network on the transmission line. This structure has dual functions of ground wire and communication. It has two functions: one is the lightning protection line of the transmission line, and provides shielding protection against the lightning flash discharge of the transmission lines; and another is using the compound in the ground line to transmit information. OPGW is a complex of overhead ground wires and cables, but not a simple addition to them.

OPGW optical cables are mainly used in 500kV, 220kV and 110kV voltage lines. They are affected by factors such as power failure, safety and so on, and are mostly applied to new lines. OPGW light is suitable for high voltage over 110kV lines, with a large span (generally above 250m), easy to maintain, easy to be maintained, easy to solve for the problem of line crossing, and its mechanical properties can meet the large span of the line; the outer layer of OPGW is metal armour, and has no influence on the high voltage electrical erosion and degradation; OPGW must be cut off in the construction and the loss of power outage is great, so it is so OPGW should be used in the new high voltage line above 110kV. In the performance index of OPGW, the larger the short-circuit current is, the more need to be armoured with good conductor, the more the tensile strength is reduced, and the short circuit current capacity should be increased under the condition of certain tensile strength, only the metal section area is increased, thus the cable diameter and cable weight will be increased. This raises safety problems for the strength of transmission line towers. There are three main types of common OPGW structures: aluminum tube, aluminum skeleton and stainless steel.
