Structure of Overhead Lines

Conductors are components used to transmit electricity and transmit electricity. The conductor is often tested by various natural conditions in operation. It must have the characteristics of good electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength, light quality, low price and strong corrosion resistance. Because China's aluminum resources are more abundant than copper, and the price of aluminum and copper is quite different, almost all of them use steel reinforced aluminum stranded wire. There is only one joint for each wire in each span, and there is no connection between the wire and the lightning conductor across the road, the river, the railway, the important buildings, the power line and the communication line.

Lightning rod

The lightning rod usually uses steel core aluminum strands, and is not insulated from the pole and tower, but is directly mounted on the top of the tower, and is connected to the grounding device through a tower or grounding wire. The function of lightning protection wire is to reduce the chance of lightning striking wire, improve the level of lightning resistance, reduce the number of lightning tripping, and ensure the safe transmission of electricity.


The tower is the general name of the electric pole and the tower. The purpose of the tower is to support wire and lightning arrester, so as to keep a certain safe distance between the wire, the wire and the lightning conductor, the wire, the ground and the cross leaps.


Insulators are electrical insulation products, usually made of electrical ceramics, also called porcelain bottles. In addition, there are also glass insulators made of tempered glass and composite insulators made of silicone rubber. The use of insulators is to insulate the wires and between the wires and the earth, to ensure that the line has a reliable electrical insulation strength, and is used to fix the wire, to bear the vertical load and the horizontal load of the wire.

In overhead power lines, metal fittings are mainly used to support, fix and connect wires and insulators into strings, as well as to protect wires and insulators.

Tower foundation

The underground device of overhead power line towers is collectively referred to as the foundation. The foundation is used to stabilize the poles and towers so that the poles and towers do not uplift, sink or collapse due to vertical load, horizontal load, accident tension and external force.

Drawing line

The cable is used to balance the transverse load acting on the tower and the tension of the conductor. It can reduce the consumption of the material of the tower and reduce the cost of the line.

Grounding device

The overhead ground wire is above the wire. It will connect to the earth through the grounding wire or grounding body of each base tower. When the ground wire is struck by lightning, the lightning can rapidly spread to the earth. Therefore, the grounding device of the transmission line is mainly to discharge the lightning current, reduce the top potential of the rod tower, and protect the insulation of the line from the flashover. It works closely with the ground wire and shields the conductor. Earthing and grounding lines are generally called grounding devices.
