Conductors are metal wires that are fixed on poles and towers to transmit electric current. They are often subject to tension, wind, ice, rain, snow and temperature changes, as well as chemical impurities in the air. Therefore, in addition to good conductivity, wire materials must have adequate mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. At present, in the design of transmission lines, overhead conductors and lightning arresters are usually made of aluminum, copper and steel materials. They have the characteristics of high conductivity, good heat resistance, high mechanical strength, vibration resistance, corrosion resistance, light weight and so on.

At present, transmission lines are mostly made of steel wires with high mechanical strength at the center, surrounded by steel-cored aluminum strands with high conductivity. The conductance of steel-cored aluminum stranded wire is slightly lower than that of copper wire, but it has the characteristics of high mechanical strength, light weight and low price, so it is especially suitable for high voltage transmission lines. Because of its large tensile strength and low sag, the steel core aluminum strand can enlarge the span.
